The 188 km stage 14 route between Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux and Mende was a bear. The wind broke up the groups quickly, and while the climbs were slightly more gentle than in days past, they were relentless. After helping to lead the charge in the first 30 kilometers with some exciting breakaways, Sagan took the day’s intermediate sprint at 90 kilometers, continuing his dominance of the green jersey. However, it was a spectacular showing all day by Astana’s Omar Fraile, but especially during the final climb, that would end up cinching him the stage win, followed by Julian Alaphilippe (QST) and Jasper Stuyven (TFS). There was little movement in the GC standings today, but the tough mountain stages ahead could shake things up.
Thomson played it strong but safe today within the main peloton, occasionally assisting his teammate Tom-jelte Slagter, who made an impressive breakaway late in the race, at one point helping to create a gap of more than 15 minutes between the leaders and the main group.
