Monday’s stage 3 saw the return of the Team Time Trail for the first time since 2015. And, like in 2015, it was again dominated by team BMC. Olympic Road Race champion Greg Van Avermaet moved into yellow and team leader Richie Porte made up some time after a crashy stage 1 shook up the favorites.
Mitchelton-Scott GreenEdge were the first team to set the pace. At the first time check they led both Sky and BMC by a second, but the latter two teams picked up the pace on the second half of the 35.5km course (much as predicted by our Best Bike Split Stage 3 Analysis). Sky finished nearly five seconds faster than Mitchelton-Scott GreenEdge, with BMC then topping Sky by four seconds. Quickstep Floors edged Mitchelton-Scott off the podium later in the day, finishing 7 seconds off the pace set by BMC. Team Sunweb rounded out the top five, increasing Tom Dumoulin’s time buffer and yellow jersey prospects.
Finally, EF Education First-Drapac p/b Cannondale deserves an honorable mention; the team finished sixth with Lawson Craddock fighting through a broken shoulder blade to help keep Rigoberto Uran in GC contention.
